Seven Cycles Interview
In the first of a series of articles on the 2011 Cycling Silk Expedition, title sponsor Seven Cycles asked Mel and Kate about their preparations for this 12-month transcontinental journey by bike. According to Seven, “The piece reveals team Cyling Silk’s approach: a special combination of planning, improvisation, humor and fortitude that prepares them to face whatever unfolds during the expedition.”
Interview with Kate and Mel about the conservation issues that inspired their Silk Road adventure. The resulting article outlines their thoughts on the importance, but also the challenges, to protecting fragile wildernesses and species at risk in Central Asia and beyond.
Green Prophet is the leading source of environment news on the Middle East region. They featured a story on the Cycling Silk expedition: ”Following their own footsteps down an entirely different path, best childhood friends Kate Harris and Melissa Yule left Istanbul to continue a year-long tour of transboundary protected areas (TBPAs) along the Silk Road. With concern that these outlaying ecosystems are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, the women intend to record their expedition – visually and in script – to draw international attention to these legendary, beautiful but decidedly rugged areas.”
A local paper covers the Cycling Silk story.
The Erin Advocate
Mel and Kate’s hometown paper, the Erin Advocate, published a full-spread on the team’s year-long research expedition. The paper will continue to cover the trip throughout the year. Unfortunately the paper is not yet accessible online – did we mention we are from a very small town?

For nitrates are not the land, nor phosphates; and the length of fiber in the cotton is not the land. Carbon is not a man, nor salt nor water nor calcium. He is all of these, but he is much, much more; and the land is so much more than its analysis. The man who is more than his chemistry, walking the earth…that man who is more than his elements knows the land that is more than its analysis.
